Row to Bled Island

One of the coolest things we did in all of Bled was renting the rowboat to get to the island with the church in the middle of the lake. The island is so iconic in every photo of Bled and it was cool to get a different perspective on the lake and surrounding beauty once you got out there. Rowing was a little bit difficult, to be honest, we went out there on a windy day and the tide was against us when we were coming back in. It was a beautiful row and we did enjoy ourselves despite putting in some effort to get out there. It probably only took us about 15 minutes to get to the middle of the island. It was a little bit of a pricey row - I think we spent about 15 euros each on the boat, but once again it was worth it.

Indulge in Bled's Cream Cake

The cream cake is a Bled delicacy, and since I celebrated my 21st birthday while we were there, we had to try it. The cream cake replaced my typical chocolate mousse birthday cake and it was truly something special. We got it from [insert bakery name here] and would highly recommend it. The portions are really big, we got two to split between the three of us and it looked like so much cake at the beginning but it tasted so good I could have eaten a lot more.

Savor Slovenian Cuisine

For my birthday dinner, we ditched our typical budget groceries or sandwiches and splurged on a nice meal at a Slovenian restaurant right near Lake Bled called Spica. The food was really good, very reminiscent of Italian fare but with a little bit of a Slovenian twist. We enjoyed our meals with some local white wine. The restaurant had some cool decor from all eras of Slovenian history and that was incredible to see as well. I would highly recommend this place.

Immerse Yourself in Natural Beauty

In Bled spend some time just appreciating the natural views. With the Alps in the distance, Lake Bled as the crowning glory, and just the general splendor of the area, there is so much to take in. You could spend a lifetime just looking around.

Hike to Bled Castle

We took the diversion around the lake trail to go up to the Bled Castle and the views did not disappoint. The castle was closed so we didn't actually get to go in, but we climbed around the rocks right below it and still got the beautiful view of the area by being up there. The climb was not too bad; it got a little steep at the top but it was a really short walk – probably about a little over a half a mile.

Stroll Around Lake Bled

The path that goes all the way around the lake is about 5 km in total. It's worth it just to see the lake, the castle, and the mountains from every different angle possible. Lake Bled is a truly magical place and seeing it from every angle you possibly can is a treat.

Enjoy a Tranquil Evening In

Although it was my 21st birthday while we were in Bled, at this point we were ready for a break from the nightlife and hustle and bustle of running around every night. We had a quiet night where we made fondue in our accommodations kitchen with Milka chocolate (our favorite) and a baguette we picked up from The Spar down the street. We were going to Salzburg next so we watched The Sound of Music while we ate fondue and I turned a year older. This is one of the best birthdays I've had and Bled was a great place to have a calm night in and just relax.
